Monkey Brain
I heard an interview with one of my favorite people today, Steve Martin. He was talking about his new book and the process of writing. The phrase “I do things that use my monkey brain” was used to explain what he worked on when he was not in the mood to write. He explains it is the part of your brain that is not creative, but very good at imitating. This is the time when he does things like edit what he has written. I am really bad about not editing what I write, as you can tell if you read heydan often.
The idea of a parallel brain that is good at type of tasks is really fun. It fits the way I think and do a great many things. I have a creative mind that cannot organize things, and an organized part of my mind that struggles when I am asked to think out side the box. Most of the time I have to explain something creative to someone else in order to write it down. I have to say what one mind is thinking aloud for the other mind to hear it and structure it. This is one of the reasons I started to write.
